Finding the Right Laptop for You

Most 15-inch laptops can handle the needs of most users such as browsing, streaming, video/photo editing, and even gaming. Usually, it comes with enough processing power to handle multiple activities. With a 15-inch display, you get to enjoy your games and movies in high resolution.

With all the choices in the market, it may be hard to choose the right laptop for you. However, with the help of our reviews and guides, you will find the best laptop for your situation.

There are many types of laptop in the market and each one addresses a specific need. That’s why it’s important to find out what is the main reason why you’re buying a laptop. In other words, ask yourself, what will you do with it most of the time?

If you are looking for something both powerful and portable, the ultrabook is your best bet. It’s usually around 12-13 inches in size but it packs a punch. The design is lightweight and sleek. The most impressive aspect of an ultrabook is its battery life. The average battery life is 8 hours while some offer more. The secret relies on the high-efficiency low-voltage processors. These processors provide maximum computing power without consuming too much power, which is why they can be a bit costly. However, what you’ll get in return is a very portable workstation.

If you need to bring all your work on the road, then you might want to look at business laptops. They’re very suitable for professional use because of their added features such as extra security options and fleet image support. This also includes data recovery in case of accidental data loss. If your business relies on your laptop, then this type of laptop is perfect for you.

For a fan of games, then the obvious choice is a gaming laptop, which can act as a substitute for a full-sized gaming desktop. While the price may be high, these gaming laptops always come with the best processors and graphic cards to handle the latest games in the market. It also comes with tools to optimize your hardware for performance.

If your budget is low and you don’t really need a laptop for gaming or video editing, then you can take a look at netbooks which has the cheapest price in the market. If you’re just looking to stream movies or browse the internet, these budget-friendly netbooks are right for you. It can also handle some research and the use of Word and Excel without any problems. Of course, you can’t expect to have a fast laptop but for basic use, it does the job well.

In line with netbooks, there’s also the Chromebook, which is another cheaper alternative. It’s primarily cheap because it does not have the typical installation of Windows but instead, you get to use Google’s own OS which is called the Chrome OS. Most of the programs that you will use in a Chromebook is web-based, which means you will be using Google Docs instead of your typical Microsoft Office suite. If you don’t mind these web-based apps, then this laptop is suitable for you.

How We Chose These Laptops

When we were looking for laptops to review, we first defined our criteria for size. Since most portable laptops smaller than 15-inch can either be an ultrabook or a netbook, which is on the opposite ends of the spectrum, we decided that it would be best to review the 15-inch model which provides both power and mobility for the user. The 15-inch is not too big, yet it also offers good performance with the right price. That is why we looked at the 15-inch laptops from different brands, just to get a good glimpse of the current market.

The next thing we looked at is the processor. We decided that it would be best to review Intel’s mainstream Core processors while excluding the Pentium and Celeron versions. These slower processors are not even close to the capability of the mainstream processors and it wouldn’t be good to compare since the gap is obvious.

Basically, we looked at three things in our review: Performance, Display, and Design. These three main factors contribute a lot to the overall value of the laptop.

Performance

We believe that this is the first thing we need to look at if you want to have an idea on what the laptop is capable of. Since the processor acts like the brain of the computer, the performance of any laptop heavily relies on the capability of its processor. While many factors contribute to the overall performance of any given computer, such as the amount of RAM available or temperature management, the processor is still the main thing that carries the whole workload.

With the help of PassMark Software, we were able to determine the scores for each laptop that we chose. PassMark uses data from both users and independent testing and this data can be very reliable in determining the actual performance of the processor. Basically, 7,000 points give you the best performance while anything below 5,000 may give you some issues when doing memory-intensive tasks.

Display

While the display screen size is all set to 15-inches, the real difference is in the resolution. This is crucial if you’re working as a designer, where you will need all the details that you can get. Most of these laptops offer 1920 x 1080 resolution which is already impressive. However, the best ones can offer up to 3840 x 2160 resolution which really sets the bar very high.

An additional feature for some of the laptops is having a touchscreen display. This helps in the overall user experience of the laptop since it’s quite easier to just tap the screen to go wherever you want to go.

Design

Design is also important when it comes to choosing a laptop. Even if you have a high-powered laptop but the design is not cut out for it, the performance will suffer. That is why design can also be critical to the overall success of the laptop. The two things we looked at is battery life and portability (weight).

Take note that if you chose a laptop instead of a desktop, you assumed that you will be travelling with it. This means heavier laptops can be a hassle. The battery life is also important because it’s not easy to find outlets when you’re travelling. That’s why a good laptop must be lightweight and has a long battery life to remain competitive in the market.

Aside from the three crucial factors in choosing a laptop, there are also secondary features that some might find useful. Some even make these features their main reason when buying a certain laptop. These secondary features include storage capacity and port availability.

Storage has become larger in today’s laptops with the 1TB as a standard. However, that’s for the traditional hard disk. With the number of people looking for faster laptops, SSDs or Solid State Drives have become more popular. While they may be more costly, SSDs offer a huge difference in performance. With SSDs, boot time is significantly reduced to mere seconds.

Port availability is always a concern since we all have our mobile devices that we want to connect to our laptops. Almost everyone we know has a USB flash drive, external hard drive, and even a tablet. With all these gadgets at our disposal, the need to connect to laptops to manage files has become essential. The standard these days is the USB 3.0 port which offers high-speed data transfer, while other models still offer the traditional USB 2.0. If you’re looking for the fastest data-transfer possible, there’s models that offer USB-C and Thunderbolt connector.

With all these features in mind, we reviewed flagship models from different brands to give you a wide range of options. With our guide, you can now choose the laptop that’s perfect for your needs and budget.
